The lights are back on

The annual Lights Before Christmas display has returned to the Toledo Zoo.  This wonderful event has been a family fun filled feature for over 20 years.  There are over a million lights strung throughout the zoo.  They must have stopped counting when they reached that milestone because that is the number given for several years, but there are more and more lights.

One beautiful tree, an 85 foot Norway Spruce has over 30,000 lights which is supposed to be more lights than the tree in Rockerfeller Center in New York.  This year that tree is all in white LED lights.  I think I preferred it when it was multicolored but whatever the lighting it is a spectactular looking tree.  The lighting of this tree last Friday night was the official opening of the seasonal holiday season at the zoo.

The tireless workers start at Labor Day to wrap and drape lights throughout the zoo.  There are also some 200 different animal designs in lights. It takes them a couple months to take them all down again too.

One of my favorites is high in a tree.  It shows the building of a spider web, bit by bit.  Another favorite is the jumping wallaby or kangaroo, going right over a fence.

Right next to cheetah valley and just outside the Carnavore Cafe is the festive dancing lights display.  The lights “dance” to some of the classics of holiday season, my favorite being the ever popular “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas”.

I would hope that everyone gets a chance to visit the Toledo Zoo this holiday season and enjoy this wonderful annual light show.

Happy Holidays everyone.
