GarLyn Zoo
I was in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan a couple weeks ago. A beautiful place to spend a week or much longer if you have the time. We stopped at the GarLyn zoo to check it out.
This zoo is small but well maintained. It only took about an hour and a half to go through and that is because I stop and talk to the animals or take pictures or just spend some time. If you wanted to, you could probably see the entire zoo in 20-30 minutes.
Those are the visitors I don’t understand at zoos. Those who visit and then spend 15-30 seconds in front of an exhibit and rush on. Do they even see the animals? Do they understand what the animal is doing or why? What is the enjoyment there?
Granted some exhibits may be timed because they are big attractions and you can only have so many people in one area to adequately see, like Pandas, or at the Toledo Zoo with our new baby polar bears. Every one wants to see, so you have to limit viewing so more people can pass by but what about the times when you have unlimited viewing?
Back to GarLyn after my mini rant…
GarLyn is a wonder place to visit. It is small, it is very visitor friendly. It had several animals I’d never seen in zoos previously…like skunks and raccoons. But that is what makes visiting new zoos so great. Seeing something you’ve not seen before up close and personal.
The 16 yr old traveling with me said her favorite animals were the two zoo cats she met. One was curled up on a bench in the sun and asked to be petted. The other was a bit more wild and hung out by the llamas and reindeer but was more playful. She would bat at hands and climb along the fence.
My personal favorites were the wolves. Beautiful animals in wooded setting much like they should be. The domestic goats in the petting area were a hoot. They would butt each other out of the way to get to the fence. You could buy a handful of grains to feed them and they knew who had the goods. We spend a bit of time there with a crotchety one who acted like the ruler of the yard.
If you ever get to Naubinway Michigan, please check out this paradise.
